Hey Friends and Family of TCC,

Sunday is Mother’s Day. I look forward to celebrating the women of Twin Cities who are moms. It’s a great day to pour on the heavy syrup and help those who fill this vital role in our society, know that they are valued. We want to honor moms. I am so grateful for my mom and her dogged determination to pray for me over the years. I believe I am who I am because of her faithfulness.

As we honor moms, I am sensitive toward those in our church who have never been a mom. It may be because of choice, life circumstance or infertility, and we know that you can sometimes feel left out. We want you to know that we are aware and care for the pain you may feel on Mother’s Day and have been praying for you.

We’re so appreciative of the single moms in our church. You carry a huge responsibility to be both bread-winner and parent of your children. We hope that this Mother’s Day you feel the support of your church. Our Single Moms ministry is actively looking for ways to meet your unique needs. Please let this team serve your needs.

There are several moms in our church who feel tremendous pain on Mother’s Day because they have lost a child and experience pangs of grief. Please know that you are in our prayers. The rest of us really have no idea what you feel, but we want to express our empathy and compassion.

Finally, there are those whose mother has died, or those whose mother hurt them in some way that should have never happened, or those whose children are causing them pain right now. We’re praying that you sense our caring concern and know that you are not alone.

We’ve planned a fun way to celebrate on Sunday by offering each family a free 5x7 photo. We’ll have three photo booths set up on our campus, and you can stop by before or after each service and get a quick picture taken of your family. Make sure to come dressed for a family picture and enjoy this as a way to celebrate the day. We’ll also give everyone a Mom’s Day card to take home or give to a special mom in your world.

Celebrating moms this weekend,
Hey Friends and Family of TCC,

This is just one of the emails of gratitude we received this week after Serve Our Community. “The words that come to mind are: AWESOME, BEAUTIFUL, WONDERFUL, and so needed. Thank you for your kindness and support - WOW! Thank you, thank you, thank you!” Isn’t that COOL! Way to go church! I am so grateful for the way you served and expressed the love of Jesus to our community.

Kim and I were out of town for the week celebrating our anniversary and had to miss the day. Even though we were not here physically, we were able to celebrate that we get to be part of a family who serves Jesus with their time and their hearts, and we prayed for eternal consequences from your investment out there. I can tell by all the communication I’m reading now that our prayers for long-term results are being answered already. Thank you all for being the hands and feet and eyes and ears of Jesus for all the individuals out there He still wants to reach through TCC.

This is why I say again and again, “God is not through with us! He has a mission for us, and we’ll pursue that mission with Him for as long as we have breath. I feel such love, warmth and excitement for our church. After 23 years, God still sees us as people having hearts after Him, and He keeps blessing us with His presence and supernatural Spirit.

We have another serving opportunity coming up on May 9 called Run For The Community. This event allows us to reach into the running segment of Nevada County and show the love of Jesus to a group of people who might never make it to church. Pastor John and Angel McGregor want you to know that they still need willing servants that morning. You don’t have to run, but you can help us make Run For The Community the best experience for runners and their families. Please call Angel at our office and let her know your desire to help.

We’ll continue our “You Drive Me Crazy” series this weekend by considering the power of our words to either build up or tear down. I am eager to experience God’s presence with you as we worship and learn from Him.

Engaging with you to share the love of Jesus,
Hey Friends and Family of TCC,

Last Saturday we were able to bless hundreds of Nevada County families through Kidz Closet. As our county continues to lag in economic improvement, more and more families find themselves strapped financially. What an opportunity we have to be Jesus’ hands and feet as we get to bless others in such a tangible way. I am so grateful for Megan Lindsen, Roseann Hultquist and the 40 volunteers who banded together to make Kidz Closet such a huge success and bless 119 families. I am moved to the depths of my heart by your generosity and “others” attitude. You bless me as we bless others together.

Serve Our Community is THIS Saturday, April 25, 8:00am – noon. We’ll gather together at 8:00 for a continental breakfast, time of prayer and instructions, then at 8:30 we’ll go out wearing our Twin Cities Cares t-shirts and blanket our community with the love of Jesus. We have around 20 different projects we’re going to engage in together as we step out and serve. You can sign up by contacting Angel @ ext. 400, or you can just show up! Come join us as we serve together. This will be so fun!

We’ll continue our “You Drive Me Crazy” series this weekend with a look at how essential it is that each of us take a look at and own the part we have in making our relationships crazy. In order to have healthy relationships, we must all ask how we contribute to relational stress and what we can do to contribute to relational peace. Jesus has made us new, let’s act like it.

Engaging with you to share the love of Jesus,
Hey Friends and Family of TCC,

This was our sixth year of doing Sisters’ Closet, and it just keeps getting more meaningful for me. Many in our culture point fingers at the church and say, “Where is the love and concern for the hurting?” I wish everyone could see the smiling faces and the tears of women who are awed and surprised by such a tangible expression of compassion. Thank you to Melinda Dudley, Karen Abbot, Nancy Cunningham and the amazing team of 87 women who serve to make this event happen.

It was so cool to let the women know that the very next Saturday they could come back for Kidz Closet and shop for FREE again. We’ll have moms from all walks of life here on Saturday to pick out new “gently used” clothes for their kiddos. If you have kids clothing stored at your house, this is a good time for Spring cleaning. Bring them to the church during business hours or on Friday from 3pm–7pm. The shopping begins at 9am on Saturday.

Serve Our Community is just a week away. Hey Friends and Family of TCC,

You make me smile! I was full of joy as I walked away from our final Easter service on Sunday. Your love for people who need to experience the love of Jesus was so visible in the way you invited folks, served extra services, participated fully and prayed faithfully. Thank you so much for all you did to make our Easter so amazingly worshipful. I know God must have had a huge smile, too.

Over the next few weeks we are going to reach out to our community in a couple of high-impact ways, and I want to let you know how you can participate.

Sisters’ Closet is this weekend. Here’s how it works. You bring your gently used clothing items to the church on Friday from 3pm – 7pm. We will have a team of women who will sort those clothes and get them ready to “sell” on Saturday. The really cool thing is that everything on Saturday is FREE! Imagine with me what it will be like on Saturday morning at 9am as hundreds of women from our community shop for clothes – that many of them couldn’t afford – and it’s all FREE! Sisters’ Closet is a great way to serve the families of our community.

On Sunday, we began the signup process for Serve Our Community, which will be Saturday, April 25, 8:00am – noon. Hey Friends and Family of TCC,

Have you ever been on a vacation and found yourself enjoying it so much that you wished it would not have to end? That’s how I feel every time we get to go to Aptos/Sea Cliff Beach. I could sit for hours and watch the waves, smell the ocean fragrance, feel the cool air on my skin, listen to the seagulls and shout as the dolphins make their appearance. Do you get the picture?

Well, that’s how I am feeling about our Simplify series. On Monday evening, it was really sweet to sit with my Community Group and listen as people were reflecting on the series and the changes they were making in their lives as a result. It’s been super satisfying and exciting for me to be part of what God is doing in the lives of so many as I share how He is transforming me.

I want to suggest that it doesn’t have to end. Even though we’re going to move on to another series after Easter, we can all practice the things we’ve learned as we step back into a different reality. Much like coming home from vacation to a non-vacation reality. I will be praying for all of us that we will realize that Jesus’ offer to come to Him – come and be – is an offer without an expiration date. He wants us to be in relationship with Him so that when we serve, we serve out of an abundance of His Spirit.

On Sunday we conclude the series by talking about a huge consequence of believing we are in charge of the outcomes of our lives – worry and anxiety. We will end by collectively agreeing to let go of our need for control by truly trusting that God’s way is not just the best way to live, it’s the only wise choice to make in order to live a simplified life.

Seeking a simpler way to respond to life,

Hey Friends and Family of TCC,

Simplifying life will not happen without ruthlessly eliminating hurry and busyness from our lives. I remember hearing Dallas Willard’s words when asked one time about how a person could take care of his soul in a world that was fast-paced, full and often times frantic. Dallas responded by saying, “You must ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life.” Easier said than done.

Our Simplify series caused me some frustration this week. I’ve been working on the concept and vision of a simplified life now for quite some time, and I realized two things recently. First, if I’m going to simplify my life, it’s going to take effort on my part. Second, if I’m going to simplify my life, it’s going to take time. It won’t happen overnight. It will take time and determination if I’m going to be able to initiate and carry out a strategy to simplify my life into place. It will take time to see the fruit.

What I realized is that I need to learn to celebrate the steps on the journey that I take as I move toward the goal. It may take much longer to reach the goal than I had ever imagined. So, I need to be ready to give myself the needed grace and mercy when I appear to fail. My trajectory is toward simplification even though my current reality may still be extremely full and even chaotic.

Therefore, I’m even more committed to living in the Cycle of Grace (watch the service from March 1, 2015) and to overcoming busyness in my life (watch the service from March 8, 2015). I am seeking more and more to live for an audience of one! I am grateful to God that He is patient with me.

This Sunday, I will talk more about how we maintain a life that is full and yet still simple. This message is foundational to knowing how to live with power, purpose and potential. In fact, I would say, it will probably be one of the top 10 messages of my 23-year pastoral career – you may think otherwise, but I’m sticking to my story.

Seeking a simpler way to respond to life,
Twin Cities Church has always been committed to following Jesus, to becoming LIKE Jesus, and to sharing Jesus with others in as many ways as possible. Matthew 20:28a says, “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others,” and we have found that serving our community is a way to both BE like Jesus and SHARE Jesus with our world! It’s a way to show that Twin Cities Cares!

These “marching orders” are launching us into an exciting “Serve Our Community” event this spring, where we are planning to go out into our community and make a difference through serving! We are connecting with some of our local schools and community partners to discover some significant ways that we can be the hands and feet of Jesus in serving them. What a great picture: Putting hundreds of TCC people out into the community all at the same time, selflessly working to help local organizations do what they do BETTER!

We are targeting Saturday morning, April 25, as our “Serve Our Community” day, and we need each and every TCC person, group, and family to see how they can get involved. Some projects will be small, some much larger. Some will involve heavy labor, others will be much “lighter duty.” Some projects will need some people to be skilled in certain areas, while others will simply be looking for warm bodies with willing hearts. All that to say: There is a place for YOU!!

More details will be released as we get closer to April 25, but please plan on being a part of this project. So put it on your calendar, and get ready to engage with the rest of TCC as we “Serve Our Community!”
I did get a hint as I prepared last week and Googled “busyness” that it would be a big deal simply by how many articles and blogs have been written on the subject. If you missed Sunday, please watch the service now – go ahead, you’re not too busy!

One thing I had to cut out of my message because I had a time constraint is the suggestion to eliminate the word “busy” from your vocabulary. I challenged our staff to do that a couple of years ago, and I’ve seen it make a huge difference. Eliminating the “busy” from your vocabulary actually lowers your stress. It’s interesting how this label actually increases a person’s sense of being too busy. Eliminating “busy” from your vocabulary also makes you more approachable to others.

I read about a study that showed that when we do an analysis of our lives, most people discover that they are not as busy as they imagine themselves to be. We work ourselves into a scarcity frenzy by our overuse of the word busy. We end up believing the story and feeling the results even when our lives are just fine.

Here’s a list of words I copied from an article on “Ten Words to Use Instead of Busy.” Here’s her list: 1. Intentionally Full 2. Abundant 3. Rich 4. Engaged 5. Wholehearted 6. Captivated 7. Productive 8. Resplendent 9. Dynamic 10. Excited. Why don’t you work to make a switch and see what a difference a word can make!

This week, we’re going to talk about simplifying our consumption of stuff which includes the management of our finances. I can’t wait to see what God has in store for each of us as we gather together and His Holy Spirit draws us to the love of Jesus.

Longing for a simplified life,
First, thanks for being so open and vulnerable about your own struggles with acceptance and approval. Second, remember what we talked about as we began our Simplify series. Everyone seemed to resonate with the distinction between the cycles of works and grace. You can download the Message Notes to see the diagrams.

Cycle of Works
I strive to achieve
I feel some significance
I gain temporary strength
I feel a temporary sense of acceptance which does not last, and I start over to achieve
I am overwhelmed, exhausted and anxious

Cycle of Grace
I am accepted by God – just as I am
I receive strength to sustain myself
I discover true and lasting significance
I achieve things that serve others out of a response to grace rather than duty
I am restful, joyful and full of energy for life

I am deeply grateful to others including Bill Gaultiere, SoulShepherding.org, and John Ortberg, JohnOrtberg.com for help in grasping these two cycles. A good book that has one chapter on the cycle of grace is Soul Keeping by John Ortberg.

As we seek to live out the words of Jesus, I am praying for you that you will refuse to live in a cycle that is all about seeking approval and acceptance. Jesus calls to you, “Come to Me, all of you, who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, let Me teach you, because I am humble and gentle of heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”

Will you read those words again? Picture Jesus with a loving smile on His face inviting you to receive His acceptance and love, offering you His strength and sustenance, providing you a sense of significance and calling, eager to achieve His will with you. What a restful way to live.

This week, we’re going to talk about the solution to an epidemic in our culture – Busyness. I can’t wait to see what God has in store for each of us as we gather and His Holy Spirit draws us to the love of Jesus.

Longing for a simplified life,
One of the action points from last week’s message concerning our mission to lead as many people as possible into a transforming relationship with Jesus Christ is that we would winsomely invite people to attend our church. I am eager to hear how the invitations you’ve extended to your friends are going. Everything I read today still indicates that people would be willing to try church – if someone would just invite them. I am praying that you will be the one who reaches out and initiates that gracious invitation.

Two weeks ago, I heard a story that may inspire you. The sister of a woman in our church died and at her memorial service the story was told of how her name was written on the floor of our church before we put our carpet in. Just to let you know what that means – we had a special preview tour of our building before we moved in and at the end of the tour, we had an opportunity write names of family members and friends who didn’t know Jesus with prayers that they would come to experience Jesus and say “YES” to Him. Well, this woman wrote her sister’s name on our floor and then a few years later her sister said “YES” to Jesus.

After the service, the woman who attends our church said to the sister’s daughter, “Your name is written there as well, and I’m praying for you.” Folks God uses us as part of His family to help people see and know Jesus. Remember, there is no impact without contact. I am praying for all the friends and family members who are receiving their winsomely delivered invite from you.

Sunday is also our 23rd anniversary. I am still overwhelmed with joy at how God has used the dream of six families to build a church where people could experience His love and grow to become like Jesus. I will start a new series on Sunday called Simplify. Sunday’s message will lay the groundwork for a life of joy and peace as we learn to live in the “easy yoke” of Jesus.

Longing for a simple life,
Mark Hadley presented it so clearly on Sunday as he talked about the Pathway or Journey to a Transformed Life. Reality says that we only move forward by action. Not to act is to move backward and atrophy.
Mark clearly and creatively taught Dallas Willard’s VIM model of life transformation.

V = Vision: living as Jesus lived as His follower or apprentice
I must focus on the goal of growth

I = Intention: the decision to take steps toward that vision
I must intend to grow

M = Means: the method or catalysts that will lead to transformation
I must train if I’m going to grow

Mark also talked about evaluating where we are on a continuum so that we can have perspective on where we are in our progress of spiritual transformation. The goal is total surrender to Christ in every area of life. That is going to take work and effort. It is going to require empowerment from God and encouragement from others. This is not a journey we will walk alone. If you missed Sunday, please watch the service soon.

This Sunday morning we’re going to focus our attention on how we can engage in what God is doing in our church. I know our church is far from perfect, but we’re listening to God and following His lead as He uses us to lead as many people as possible into a growing and transforming relationship with Jesus Christ. I am going to unpack some of what that means this week. I hope you’ll be there so that you can be informed and invested in what God is doing.

Engaging with you,
I was so thrilled with God’s movement and our involvement in last Sunday’s services. On Sunday morning we walked through the meaning and experience of Communion. Then on Sunday evening we sang to our great God and heard three stories of how God used our church to do an amazing work of healing, redemption and transformation. As I walked to my car, I was emotionally moved by God’s love. If you missed either or both services, please log on now and watch or listen.

I was bummed at myself after Sunday evening’s service that, as we were celebrating victories in our church, I forgot to mention our inspired emphasis on prayer. God continues to move as a direct result of His people earnestly going before Him in humble prayer. Our prayer renewal resulted in the beautiful Prayer Garden, a prayer service and the opportunity for people to pray each Sunday at 8:00am here at the church.

One of the stories of life-change we heard on Sunday spoke of how a retreat was a catalyst in that person’s spiritual and relational connection. Retreats are a great time to get away from the normal routines of life and experience God’s grace and presence in a fresh way. Our Spring Getaway for women is coming soon. Ladies, I can’t recommend this more highly. Join other women from TCC and be inspired together. Make sure to sign up at church on Sunday or online.

This Sunday morning we’re going to focus our attention on our personal spiritual growth and transformation. God has promised us that He’ll meet us as we practice certain spiritual disciplines. Those disciplines then lead to steps of trust and growth. We’ll take a look at a spiritual growth plan that will help you discern where you are in your transformation to become like Jesus.

Engaging with you,
That’s why most people who discuss the role of the church in today’s world would agree that we need to lead with love, lean into truth and love with abandon if we are going to impact the world. If you missed John’s message, Engage Culture, please watch or listen to it soon.

It’s critical that we ask God for courage and wisdom and then engage culture with Him. As we talk about our own engagement in this series, it’s essential that we come to see ourselves as Christ’s ambassadors and representatives to our world. Our mission is clarified in this statement I heard quite a few years ago: people won’t care about what you know until they know how much you care. Our Friend Day is March 1. Will you continue praying for the person or people you want to invite to join you that day? I’ll be starting a new series called “Simplify” that I’m so excited to share.

On Sunday morning we’re going to experience Communion – the Lord’s Supper together. I want to encourage you to spend a little time between now and then asking God to prepare you to meet with Him in a dynamic encounter as we commemorate the death and resurrection of Jesus together.

I hope you’ll plan to join us this Sunday evening as we celebrate some of the life-transformation God has allowed us to experience in 2014. We have a fun and celebrative evening planned that everyone will find meaningful.

Engaging with you,
Ultimately, what we’ve heard is that He wants our church to be about His business. He isn’t necessarily calling us to be busy as much as He is calling us to be purposefully engaged. The past two weeks we’ve learned God’s plan for His church. We are all a necessary part of the organism called church. Notice that I said, “organism.”

A church is a living organism made up of members who are alive in Christ. As a person comes to know Jesus, He makes them fully alive. I remember my friend Scott Owens started a church a few years ago in San Francisco called Fully Alive after that truth.

Folks, I wish we could all come to the place of faith where we realize this truth. Knowing Jesus has made us new, set us free, and called us to serve Him is the most liberating knowledge we can have. The past two weeks we’ve been encouraged to Engage in Community and to Engage in Calling. These messages are critical for us to realize our full potential in Christ. If you missed them please watch them soon.

The huge distinction I want to make is this: God is not giving us life and unity and community and meaning just so that we can be self-actualized. No. Instead, He’s calling us to a place where we realize our blessings in Christ were given to us so that we could be empowered even more to shine for Him.

On Sunday, we’ll be talking about how to “Engage Culture.” When we come to church each week and hear from God, the experience is not just for us and our growth. What happens is that as God works in us, we are so inspired and live with such awe that everywhere we go we want to influence others to know Jesus and show His love to our world.

Engaging with you,
At the end of that time away, we sensed God giving us a clear direction – to encourage His people to engage in their individual piece of what God is doing in us and to engage corporately in what God is doing through our church.

Folks, you’ve heard me say again and again over the years that Jesus Christ and His church are the hope of the world. If we truly believe that, then, honestly, it really should be observable in our actions. One action of engagement that surprises me – and it’s not just Twin Cities – is how many people attend church so irregularly. In fact, the latest study shows that twice, and in some cases once a month, is considered “regular” by many who claim to be followers of Jesus.

I just don’t think that is enough. On Wednesday evening, Kim and I were able to share with a group of young families how we kept Christ at the center of our home. Next to our personal devotion, church involvement was a strong component of our vision for our family and how to raise them to know Jesus. As you know, we even go to church while on vacation. I wanted them to see that we didn’t just attend church because we had to, (our jobs), but we attend church because we want to.

Hebrews 10:25 says, “Let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of His return is drawing near.” Church involvement will help you grow in faith, trust, peace, joy, humility and a host of other attributes the Bible says are to be evident in those who know Jesus. On Sunday, we’ll look at the life of engagement God offers those who are “called” by Him. I can’t begin to tell you how relevant and integral the words of Paul will be to our transformation.

Engaging with you,
As I told you on Sunday, I am so proud of our church. When I wrote a letter that will be included in our annual giving and contribution statements, I was moved to tears in my gratitude for your faith and trust in God that shows itself in your generosity and love for people. I mentioned to the 10:45 service on Sunday that you might read each line of the section of the letter listing the numbers of people we helped or assisted in 2014. Will you do that? You’ll discover that our church is making a huge impact. Each number represents a life and possibly even a home that our church touched with the love of Jesus last year.

On Sunday, I presented our 2015 Church Prayer modeled for us by the Apostle Paul and recorded in Ephesians 1. Hopefully you can watch the service soon if you weren’t able to be there. I received some amazing feedback, and I’m already seeing spiritual fruit as I’ve prayed each day this week. I can’t wait for Saturday when I get to pray for the Christ-based Ministry Partner of the week. Look at the end of this email for this week’s Saturday prayer focus.

I was so bummed on Sunday when I realized that I had forgotten to mention two ways you can jump-start your prayer engagement. First, the Prayer Garden is now officially completed. You can stop by and pray anytime day or night. You can even reserve it for your group if you want to pray with others. Where is the Prayer Garden? It’s outside off the southwest corner of our building (think Children’s wing) next to the parking lot. Stop by and spend a few moments of silence with God. Second, the Prayer Trail signs have been changed to reflect our 2015 Prayer. You can come and walk around our building any time you want and be inspired to pray.

This week we’ll be focusing on Engaging Together in Community. Our Groups Team has done a superb job this winter of giving us even more groups with even more studies to help you engage in your spiritual growth. I hope you’ll be here on Sunday to hear how engagement in a group can stimulate your spiritual growth and development.

Engaged with you,
At times, I struggle in my devotion to God’s plan for my transformation. And I know why. I struggle in my transformation because I struggle in my commitment to God’s plan. I was thinking about this today in my newly cleaned up office. What will it take to keep my office clean and clutter free for an entire year? Daily cleaning. And that, my friends, is my struggle.

When I began 2014, I had great ideas and hopes for how this was going to be the year I finally attained what I desire – anxiety free living. As I ended 2014, I realized that even though I had made progress, I was still fighting anxiety and the depression that anxiety creates in me. Last January, I was privileged to be part of a spiritual formation group that met for an entire week. After that, I followed up with weekly and bi-weekly spiritual coaching sessions. I am so glad I did. But what I realize is that I was relying on these sessions to be all that I needed to really change.

That’s true for every one of us. If we’re going to change, we must engage in certain disciplines that will help us be the kind of person tomorrow that we’re not today because there is no magic wand. There is no secret short-cut. It’s about engagement. So, this year, I’m committing to more than just good intentions concerning God’s plan. I am committing to engagement in God’s plan. You’ll hear more about this in the weeks to come.

For now, let me say that the number one method for spiritual formation is – get ready, drum roll, please – Bible engagement. Engaging in the Bible and listening for God to speak is more than just attending church once a week and hearing a pastor talk about the Bible. Bible engagement is when we read it, listen for God to speak, and then write out a prayer or thought. And it’s helpful to do this daily.

Last week we introduced our daily Bible reading plan. In today’s world of devices and apps, many people want a plan that can be delivered to their device. If that’s you, let me recommend my favorite Bible app and site. It’s called YouVersion. You can click here and follow the link to the page for yearly reading plans. Pick one – the one that matches our plan is called “Life Journal Reading Plan.” I look forward to hearing your stories of how God is using your engagement in His Word to transform you.

On Sunday, I’ll be introducing our 2015 Church Prayer. Please be in church to hear how to apply this prayer we’ll be engaging in together for the entire year. I’d still love to hear how the 2014 prayer impacted you. Please email me and let me know, or post a comment below.

Looking forward to a year of engagement,
I am a hoarder. So, this week I did something way out of my comfort zone. I convinced Kim to come with me to the church office for a purge and organize session that was WAY overdue. As difficult as it was to part with 9 ½ years of valuable stuff, I’m now sitting in a super clean office and ready to move forward into a new year without the clutter from the past.

I say that for this reason. I want to encourage you to end 2014 with some purging and organizing. Will you spend some time asking God what He’d like you to leave behind as you step forward into a new year? I’d like to ask you to spend some time looking at your schedule, finances, health, work and relationships and ask God to help you clarify what is most important.

On Sunday, January 4, we’ll begin a new series designed to help all of us to engage in God’s plan for our transformation. It’s my hope that we can launch the year with renewed vision and passion for what God wants to do in us and through us. It’s my prayer that He will use us as His vessels to unleash His love, compassion and gospel message in our community and world.

Bible engagement is number one in the latest studies of what helps people grow in their faith. I want to encourage you to begin the year with a plan for engaging with your Bible. If you want to follow our church’s reading plan, you can get it here. Make sure to do more than read. Process and pray over what you sense God saying to you. Engagement with the Bible includes letting the words you read go from your mind to your heart.

In a few weeks, we’re going to share the 2015 Church Prayer. If you prayed the 2014 Church Prayer consistently, will you drop me an email and let me know how this practice helped you grow closer to God? I’d love to hear from you.

Looking forward to a year of engagement,
In fact, Jesus’ earthly ministry disappointed many. The Jewish leaders expected their Messiah to praise them, but Jesus condemned their hypocrisy. Jesus’ followers often didn’t understand what He was saying. They expected Him to free them from Roman oppression, but Jesus had a different mission. Instead of turning the entire world right side up, He came to turn individual hearts right side up.

Sometimes God works in ways we would not expect in order to accomplish His redemptive plan. How has God worked in surprising ways in your life this year? How can we prepare for the future surprises He has in store?

As Mary contemplates being the mother of “God her Savior” and all that will mean for her personally, her people, and the world, her love and trust in God’s plan is unwavering. She was going to be a part of God’s redemptive plan!

Think about God’s redemption in your own life. What would your life be like without it? Consider a prayer of gratitude for our Savior who came into the world to save us.

I hate to say this because 2nd service folks will feel left out, but 1st service folks ended up filling 72 stockings. I wish you could have been here at church yesterday as 60 high school age kids received those stockings, a home cooked meal, played games and best of all – laughed. From what we have heard, this might be the only “normal” Christmas event these kids will experience. Many won’t even receive presents. So, our gift was a tangible way of showing them that someone cares. Twin Cities Cares, and as we do, they can begin to grasp the fact that God does, too.

Here’s another really cool thing. Because you gave extra stockings we are able to do a similar Christmas party for 25 students who are part of a new continuing education program for kids 18–25 who, by their own choice, want to get the diploma or vocational training that would allow them to become positive contributors in society as productive citizens. This is a new ministry we’ve just become involved with over at John Muir Charter School. We are currently providing lunch there three days per week. I’d love to see more of you get involved.

Today’s Union newspaper had an editorial about Courage Worldwide, and our partnership with them. What great exposure we’ve been able to garner for this awesome new ministry partner. Courage Worldwide is doing their best to educate us concerning the sexual exploitation of young girls worldwide. Their goal is to build Courage Houses where girls can find a place of healing and restoration as they leave the trap of the sex business. Our next event with Courage Worldwide is a screening of a documentary on January 29 here at Twin Cities. We’re inviting anyone in our community who wants to be involved to come and get informed.

Why is there such a spiritual surge happening in the people of our church? What’s different around here? I believe it can be attributed to the prayers of a few who felt God call them to help raise the banner of prayer in our midst. If you’d like to engage in prayer with these folks, come early on any Sunday at 8:00am and pray with them. They meet in room 136.

This week we’re going to hear the words of another of the Songs of Christmas. We’ll be looking at Mary’s Song of Trust. If you missed last Sunday, please watch or listen before you come. It will inspire you for this Christmas season.

Loving you more than I can express,
The message I shared on Sunday has become so important to me as I’ve grown in my relationship with Jesus. As I shared on Sunday, I come from a “duty” framework of Christianity that I’m working through in my life. As I continued to hit the wall in my walk with Jesus, I would most often look for something I was either NOT DOING or NEEDED TO DO MORE. What I continue to discover is this: I cannot change my heart by doing more for Jesus. My heart is changed as I do more with Jesus.

Being a Follower of Jesus is ALL about relationship, not religious duty.

I had several meaningful encounters and emails after Sunday as people were moved to evaluate their own approach to walking with Jesus. Do we love Him so much that all other affections appear comparatively as hate? Wow!

One person asked me to send them my words to our younger adults concerning this issue and what constitutes success in life. This is what I sent: “What I was basically saying as I addressed those in their 20s and 30s is that many of the gray hairs in the room would say, ‘Listen to this. It’s important. Right now in this time of your life, you will feel that everything is about getting the right degree, right job, right spouse, right place to live, right home in that place, right friends, right etc.’ It’s natural, and society fuels that – in fact, it even creates anxiety and depression in young people who can’t seem to find these “right” things. So, listen to what I’m saying because Jesus promises us that if we put Him first NOW, He will meet all our needs and even the deepest longings of our hearts. As crazy and illogical as it may seem, pursuing Him is the most important thing you can do.”

If you missed it, please watch the service so that you can hear my heart as we looked at these Outrageous words of Jesus.

This week we begin a new series on the Songs of Christmas. We’re dedicating the Christmas season to a study of the four songs written by real people who had their lives rocked by the birth of Jesus. Their songs are included in the first two chapters of the book of Luke. We’ll look and listen to the words of these songs and let them impact our lives with “atomic elbows” (from Sunday’s message).

Looking forward to being with Jesus as we celebrate His birth,
I could tell from the response in the room and from the Connection Cards that many of you were as well. Jesus’ outrageous word to the rich young ruler about selling all his stuff and giving it all away was definitely piercing to me. What a challenge to stop and ask myself, “What is it that would be hard for me to give away if Jesus asked for it?” Then I realized that, in some aspect, He has already asked me to do that. It’s all wrapped up in God’s claim on my life and my willingness to see myself as a manager instead of an owner. If you weren’t here on Sunday, make sure to watch the service online. Enjoy the feature song by our band called “Too Much Stuff.”

One way we can engage in wrestling through the struggle of the holiday spirit of consumerism and spending is to participate in our annual Year-End Gift. The purpose of this gift is multi-layered. First, it inspires us to go before God and recall all of His blessings in our lives over the past twelve months. Second, it is an opportunity to go before Him and ask, “God, will You show me what I can give back to You as an expression of my gratitude?” Third, it allows our church to offset some of our expenses during the coming year so that we can continue our support for all the work we do in our community. It also allows us to strategically reach forward and improve what we get to do together as a church family.

Giving to our Year-End Gift is simple. You can give at church on Sunday with a special envelope or give online. In fact, if you haven’t used our online giving option, this would be a good time try it out. You’ll be amazed at how easy it is to use our secure online giving site through Fellowship One.

I love your generous hearts, church Family. EVERY Christmas basket giving tag was picked over the past three weeks. Soon, our office corridors will be full of huge baskets as we get to bless our community through your generosity. We just found out about a need we can fill for our At-Risk Student Christmas party. They will have about fifty 16-20 year old kids show up, many who have very little or no support from home. In fact, our giving to them may be the only gift they receive for Christmas. Here’s the deal, we have one week to do this. So, will you stop by the Special Events table in the lobby on Sunday and pick up a stocking, then follow the instructions and fill it and bring it back to church on December 14 or to our office by December 15? A $20-$50 investment will go a long way to show the love of Jesus as well as show these youth that “Twin Cities Cares!” Thank you for your generous acts of tangible kindness.

This week we’re going to look at another of Jesus’ outrageous statements. It will reach right at our hearts as it clarifies just what it means to be a Follower of Jesus.

Looking forward to hearing from Jesus,
Of all the attitudes we get to choose, gratitude seems to be the most beneficial. I read a study that said, “Gratitude research shows that thankfulness has the strongest link to mental health and physical well-being of any of the thirty most commonly studied personality traits.” Gratitude leads to healthy, less stressed, more social, and happier people.

On Sunday, after the offering time, I challenged us to be “gratitude givers” - to be people who change the atmosphere through our words of thanks. The idea came to me when I read a Facebook post from a woman who was shopping last week and said, “No excuse me or thank you out there today. Only blank stares.” Folks, as we enter into the holiday season which begins with a day set aside to express thanks for what we have and ends with songs of joy over the greatest gift we could ever receive, let’s make sure our attitude and actions match the reason we celebrate.

Gratitude is spawned as we become fully aware of God’s presence and goodness. How much do you focus on the fact that God is always there and working out His plan for your best?

Gratitude grows as I humbly realize that I really don’t deserve anything. I am not entitled. Instead, I am humbled to have what I have. When I feel I am entitled, my speech is littered with grumbling, but when I am content with what I have, my speech is flowered with gratitude.

Gratitude is an expression of blessing as a person reflects on God’s presence and provision. I know I am blessed beyond belief. My wife, kids, family, friends, church, purpose, mission, calling, health, home and faith are all gifts given to me by our generous and good God. I am one blessed and thankful man. So, here’s a discipline to practice this holiday season. When someone asks you how you are doing, answer this way: “Today, I am thankful for…” Let’s be people who change the atmosphere wherever we go by expressing our gratitude for all God has done.

This week we’re going to look at another of Jesus’ outrageous statements. It’s all about how to handle our stuff. It will challenge all of us.

Looking forward to hearing from Jesus,
